The NDP: What’s in a name?

Once again, there is agitation among some members of the NDP to consider changing the name of the party. At the party’s federal convention in Halifax, August 14-16, delegates will consider dropping the word “new” from the party’s moniker to have it renamed the Democratic Party.

Brian Masse, the NDP MP for Windsor West, favours the name change on the ground that the current name is dated. The party is no longer new. “Is it another 50 years that we stay ‘new’? Another 100 years?” Masse said to the CBC in an interview.

With all due respect to Masse and others who favour the name change, the proposal has nothing to do with how old an institution can be before it is no longer “new.” The Pont Neuf, completed in 1607, is the oldest standing bridge across the Seine in Paris. Oxford’s New College was founded in 1379. Don’t expect the bridge or the college to drop the “new” from their names anytime soon. The fact is that everyone is proud of these traditional names.

As always when people suggest changing the name of Canada’s social democratic party, there is an underlying political motive. After the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) won only eight seats in the federal election of 1958, party leaders decided it was time to found a new social democratic party, a party with a new outlook, organizational structure and a new name. In 1961, following a three year debate about how to remake Canadian social democracy, a founding convention was held in Ottawa. A number of names were considered and New Democratic Party was the one that was chosen.

During the three year debate about establishing the new party, a principal goal of many activists was to broaden the party to take in people who were referred to as “liberally minded.” The idea was to move the party toward the liberal centre of the Canadian political spectrum. Some delegates favoured calling the party Democratic while others wanted it to be called the Social Democratic Party. New Democratic Party was a compromise. It avoided the name Democratic which brought to mind the party that was in power south of the border under President John F. Kennedy. In the minds of delegates, while Kennedy’s party was to the left of the American Republicans, it was not a social democratic party. And the whole point of establishing the CCF in 1933 and the NDP in 1961 had been to create a social democratic or socialist party that would not simply be an ideological soul mate of the Liberals.

The word “New” in the NDP suggested a new conception of society. The fundamental difference between the societal vision of social democrats or socialists on the one hand and liberals on the other is that the former viewed capitalism as an inherently exploitative social system, while the latter believed that capitalism could be reformed and made more equitable through reforms that made things fairer for all in the footrace of life.

The difference between the NDP and the Liberals, even when the two parties have seemed close at times, has always been about the attitude of the two parties to capitalism. Liberals, and American Democrats, are capitalist to the core. They believe that capitalism is the best system ever conceived by human beings. It can be improved upon, they think. But they cannot conceive of transcending it to establish a new and more fundamentally equitable social order. Social Democrats, however centrist they may be, cling to the vision of a new society which make take many decades to realize, but that remains an essential aspiration.

While they are not likely to say it, those who want to rename the NDP the Democratic Party want to abandon the social democratic or socialist dimension in the party’s outlook. They want to move the party to the centre to have it compete with the Liberals on their own ideological turf.

From J.S. Woodworth, to Tommy Douglas, David Lewis and Jack Layton, Canadian social democrats have held out the hope of creating a new social order in Canada. In the establishment of medicare, something which Barack Obama’s Democrats cannot match because they are too committed to the market system, social democrats have transformed what it means to be Canadian.

We need a social democratic party in Canada. Let’s not play games with phony debates about name changes that are really calls to abandon what the NDP stands for.

Risky, but maybe what you want. Depends on strength of Democrat brand. Should be strong here.
DP is a useless abbreviation.
Maybe "Democrats" is catchier?

I dread anything that makes it easier for Canadians to lose sight of themselves in the deluge of American words, symbols, metaphors and 'brands'. As dreary as the name "New Democratic Party" is at least it's distinct and, as Professor Laxer has pointed out, has a history. If they become the "Democratic Party" then, within about two months, most of the few Canadians who vote at any time thereafter will be thinking that they're voting for Obama.

The problem is (and I'm not trying to be sarcastic here) that to most Canadians who are aware of the NDP the chief idea they get of the NDP's vision of a new society is that the NDP wants a society with proportional representation. In other words, a society in which the NDP reliably finishes third.

I've said it before -- if the NDP stood up as the champion of the mixed economy the other parties would have something to worry about, even if they called themselves the Gangsta Pixies.

The mere infatuation with the NDP is what makes Harper PM. it is just math.

NDP is a brand and changing the brand won't attract new voters, but changing the vision of the party will. Social democrats must step up and prepare a new vision for the party and thereby for Canada.

A two-tier health care system.

A clear, people-based agenda for the environment.

An equity plan for all Canadians, especially the poor.

A revised tax system.

A vision of selflessness.

The times are changing and we're currently in a social, spiritual and economic transition. A change in the party's name won't be enough, but a change in the soul of what the party stands for now, and where it wants to lead this country will have mass appeal.

Now, fellow NDPers: let's get to work!!

The only name change that would respect the history of the movement would be to Social Democratic Party. It would also link us to our European cousins.

Two years of trying to explain why you want or need to change your name followed immediately by a lifetime of unsatisfactory justifications for why you did it.

No way. No how. Stay New and be New.

I'm a delegate to the Convention, and although I'm not opposed to a name change in principle, I will not support the name, Democratic Party. It is unthinkable that we would adopt the same name as the Americans' equivalent to Canada's Liberals.

On a lighter note, a friend of mine whose Italian father immigrated to Canada as a "Displaced Person" told me (with a smile) that his father would never vote for the DPs.

Social Democrats - maybe; Democrats - no way.

I'm a delegate to the convention, and I will not support changing our name to that of what is effectively America's liberal party.

I've even created a button for myself with the donkey from the Democratic Party logo and a caption that reads, "Democratic Party? What a Dumb-ass Idea."

Change the name if we must, but something a little less red, white and blue, please.

I guess that if New Democrats lack the guts to rename themselves the New Socialists then the Social Democratic Party could be a worthy rename.
Democratic Party ??? Give me a break !

Here's a notion -- the NDP is so fond of the phrase "everyday Canadians" that maybe they should call themselves the Everyday Party.

That phrase demonstrates how bloody out of touch they are. I suggest replacing it with "the great majority of Canadians." The NDP seems not to understand that it has a lot to offer that group.

If the NDP is to select a new name, should the new name be descriptive or aspirational?

If descriptive, then they should choose Social Program Party because they promote the adoption of (often worthy) social programs.

If aspirational, then they should choose Democratic Socialist Party because they would like to achieve socialism by democratic means (including new social programs).

Social Program Party has no allure and would attract no new voters. Canadians are, in great majority, ideological liberals and so most would not vote for the Democratic Socialist Party (or even a tepid Social Democratic Party).

Rock & hardplace. What is a poor party to do?

I'd say: accept the judgement of history and forget power. Call yourselves the Democratic Socialist Party of Canada and advocate social programs and social transformation by democratic means. You won't win elections (Canadians don't want what you advocate) but at least you'll stand for something. The last thing we need is yet another liberal party: we already have the Liberals and the Conservatives, both more or less pro-market free-enterprising (and therefore pro-Capitalist).

Party principles have a future, not sure just when a 51% or whatever socialist economy becomes more efficient than whatever baseline you measure against.

Thx for history lesson. Obviously don't use a name associated with politics to the right of Liberals.
I like GreeNDP, mostly out of boredom. Greens only drew 5% last election and merger of the right bled majority-ish 40% combined PC/Reform support.
Anyone know how the Greens in Europe are different than their Social Democrats? Greens bigger there. I assume they are like our Greens but IDK Social Democrats. I lost interest learning when saw these types of names were used for fascist/communist Parties.

Does anyone actually think that people aren't voting NDP because of the word 'New' in the name?

And doesn't this transparent attempt to cash in on the (likely temporary) popularity of Obama display contempt for voters? It's premised on the belief that voters are ignorant enough to be fooled into thinking that somehow this party has something to do with Obama's. I think some probably are, but there's a decided irony in a party naming itself 'democratic' when the whole premise of the name is voter ignorance.

The PCs had a *reason* to drop the 'Progressive' label. They had just merged into a new party. No such logic applies here.

I agree that the NDP is a tired brand. But thinking that can be solved by a silly name change just shows how lame the party has become. It's a symptom of the problem, not the cure to it.

Too bad the name change resolution failed to make it to the floor for debate, but it may return after the inevitable defeat in the next election.

I like Socialist Party / Parti Socialiste but could live with the variants: Democratic Socialists, Social Democrats. Not that these names are conducive to electoral success either, of course. They're just more honest and faithful to the spirit of the Regina Manifesto.

A political convention is what the party leaders want it to be. Jack Layton and the other NDP powers like Premier Gary Doerr have long wanted to tug the federal NDP into the centre and do away with what MP Pat Martin called “airy-fairy thinking” like nationalizing the banks of Canada and legalizing marijuana.
And after being dazed by a series of speakers hawking the theme that victory was just around the corner, the faithful obliged at the party’s recent Halifax gathering. They even went so far as to steal a theme from the Conservatives: they voted to reduce small business taxes and cut regulations that supposedly trip up the little business guy.
Martin approved. As he said to the Toronto Star, “First, you win government and then you save the world.”
Anyone who believes that should repeat after me: “Tony Blair.”
But no matter, this bunch isn’t about to see the Promised Land. Those eight seats Layton won in the last election are sand castles built at the expense of a Liberal Party lead by the hapless Stephane Dion. With Dion at the helm, the party couldn’t organize a five-year-olds birthday party, let alone fight an election. That will change.
After the next election, the NDP is going to have to come to grips with a moral crisis. Jack Layton had the party supporting the war in Afghanistan until the summer of 2006 when Israel stomped into Lebanon. Then Layton changed his mind, not because he had seen the light, but because the party was split over what to do about Israel and needed distracting. “Bring our troops home, now!” became his cry.
It worked. When Layton saw the faithful’s attention was elsewhere, he downplayed his opposition to the war. He was right. By agreeing to abide by cabinet solidarity, the party happily swallowed its opposition to the war for a chance at some seats in a Liberal/NDP cabinet. And in doing so, it stabbed the anti-war movement in the back. “Et tu, Jack?”
As recently as March of this year, according to anti-war activist Kimball Cariou writing in Rabble, Layton praised President Obama’s Afghan policy of escalating the war as “balanced.” This writer found Layton’s comments – as quoted in the article – at worst an endorsement of Obama’s policy and at best cunningly vague, more worthy of a Mackenzie King than a T.C. Douglas or Ed Broadbent.
Besides being a shameful moral lapse, there’s the menace of Canada’s bloated military-industrial complex and the threat it poses to the federal spending power.
But dealing with that will have to wait; it’s just too airy-fairy.

The way I see it, the name change itself doesn't mean anything (a turd by any other name...), but it is symbolic of the vision that people like Pat Martin and Gary Doer have for the party - essentially "third way" but not in those words because Tony Blair has been completely discredited.

Going the other way, if we call the NDP the Social Democratic Party or even the Anarchist-Communist Fuck Capitalism Queer Feminist Anti-Racist Left Party, it won't make a difference as long as those same party structures are in place and the same people are running the show trying to push their vision for the party. Incidentally, the Social Democratic Party in the UK was a right-wing split from Labour in the 80s which allied and eventually merged with the Liberal Party (hence Liberal Democrats). And Social Democrats selling out has a long history as well, even before the murder of Rosa Luxemburg, the social patriotism of various Social Democratic Parties condemned the working class of Europe to four years of slaughter in the trenches.

If the NDP wants to survive, they need to reform themselves as a party of struggle which is tied to social movements. Young people simply aren't interested in filling out the decrepit power structures within the NDP. Our generation does politics differently, and the NDP can either keep going the way they're going, or try some serious reform. Of course, I don't think the NDP is capable of the latter, and I think any effort to reach out to social movements at this time would simply be opportunism.

At 10:56 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since you don't really want the NDP to "reach out to the social movements" and don't think the NDP is going to become subservient to the political groups that direct these so-called social movements, then you want ... nothing.

There are many groups in Canada that people can join if they want to overthrow capitalism in a Bolshevik-style coup cum revolution. Most of these groups are obsessed with the NDP, which they continually support and continually denounce. They can't let go because they know that the NDP enjoys genuine popular support, can elect provincial governments and can elect a sizeable number of MPs to the House of Commons in Ottawa. The neo-Bolshevik groups (Communist or Trotskyist, broadly speaking) in Canada should stop stalking and harrassing the NDP and instead concentrate on their own "revolutionary" or electoral activities. If the people of Canada want to follow or elect members of the neo-Bolshevik groups they can.
